Playing with Strings

The Diva's Challenge this week is to use "found objects" such as cardboard pieces left over from board games as the string for a tile. I thought this challenge was so much fun that I did two challenge tiles this week. I did not have any cardboard cutouts, but I had recently acquired a bag of random plastic shapes made from the same plastic usually used for stencils. The shapes look like they might even be the punched out pieces from stencils. Here are the ones I used for my tiles this week.

Here is my first string.

And here is the completed tile using the above string. For this tile I used Hollibaugh, Crescent Moon, Paradox, Dragonair and Auraknot. I love the way the Paradox turned out when used in a star.

Here is my second string.

For this string I used just a squared version of Arukas. I think the shading turned out really well on this tile.

I spent a lot of time this past week working on pieces for the various Square One Facebook groups as well. The Focus last week was Man-O-Man. Not one I was super comfortable with, so I played with it a lot.  For the Zendala group I did this piece on black paper using a white Gelly Roller, Zenstone and Prismacolor colored pencils. I left the piece in my sketchbook, but the circle is the required 4 5/8". The tangles used are Man-O-Man and Fanz. I think I finally got the hang of Fanz after spending the previous week getting it all wrong.

I also did an ATC on black chipboard using a White Uniball.

My final Man-O-Man was combined with Purk, Squid, Cadent, Arcflower, more Nipa, Popsicles, Catkins and Paradox. The colors are done with Tim Holtz Distress Markers. I posted this tile on Square One: Purely Fun Zentangle, and then promptly cut it apart and made necklaces from each of the nine squares.

My final picture this week is another ATC, this time using Jetties which is the Square One Focus this week. Square One changes the focus tangle every Friday. This ATC is Micron Pigma and Peerless Watercolors on white chipboard.

As always, comments and critiques are welcome.

Happy Tangling!

  1. Love all of your work this week, but I think my favorite is the Dragonair star. The Paradox one is nice too, but the Dragonair one just appeals to my sense of fun, I guess. Your Man-O-Man with Fanz turned out very well too. I may have to take a look at trying Man-O-Man since I haven't tried it yet. They are all lovely and very well done.

  3. I think the shading on the second diva tile make the whole picture look like a photo taken from above, very realistic! I like it a lot!
Your first one could be on a card for christmas ;-) I love your stars!

  4. Your star string is wonderful! Love the giant hollibaugh in the background, the dark contrast really makes the stars pop.
